James Turley to retire from Ernest and Young. Turley told
the firm's worldwide partners in a November 10 communication that he would
retire on June 30, 2013. With any luck
he will step down from the Boy Scouts Board sooner then that. His past as CEO of the accounting firm who
brought us the Enron and Worldcom accounting scandals, lawsuits stemming from
the firm's audits of hospital operator HealthSouth Corp, and it has faced a
lawsuit by the New York attorney general alleging it helped Lehman Brothers engage
in a massive fraud before its 2008 bankruptcy.
But those are just a few of the accounting scandals Ernest
& Young has found itself involved. The list is long and mixed around the
world. Here is the top 10 list:
1 1.
Enron
2 2.
Worldcom
3 3.
Informix
4 4.
Sybase
5 5.
Cendant
6 6.
One.Tel
7 7.
AOL - Inflated sales
8 8.
HealthSouth Corporation - The CEO, Richard Scrushy,
went to prison for bribery and fraud.
9 9.
Cjiquita Brands International - Illegal payments
1 10. Anglo
Irish Bank - Hidden loans controversy
1 11. Lehman
Brothers - Failure to disclose transactions to investors
1 12. Sino-Forest Corporation
Mr. Turley has not been proven to be involved directly in
any of these scandals. But his leadership and association with a firm that has
been implicated can only tarnish his legacy.
He was appointed to Obama's Export Council in 2010. It was
around that time he started his campaign to change the Boy Scouts from the
inside out. "I support the meaningful work of the Boy Scouts in preparing
young people for adventure, leadership, learning and service, however the
membership policy is not one I would personally endorse," Turley said in a
statement released by his company.
Why would a person become a Board Member of a organization
who has a long stated policy of no gays as that of the Boy Scouts when they are
so opposed to that policy? Was it to
build a better Boy Scouts for the youth or was it to transform the Boy Scouts
into a political correct organization?
The most important question is how did the Boy Scouts select
such a person, who clearly is bent or destroying the very foundations it was
built upon, as a board member? The Boy Scout leadership stated "The Boy
Scouts of America respects the opinions of our board members and are thankful
for their leadership," the statement said. "While we have supporters
and board members with different viewpoints on this issue, and who may choose a
different direction for their organizations, we believe that good people can
personally disagree on this topic and still work together."
That sound like BS at best. Can you imagine the Catholic
Church appointing an atheist as Pope and justifying it with a statement like
that. The Boy Scouts have been betrayed by the leadership and Mr. Truly is just
the point man in the attack to transform the organization.
